Rep. Houchin has 3 bills that advance through subcommittee

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Congresswoman Erin Houchin (R-District 9) has announced that three of her bills have passed through subcommittees in the U.S. House of Representatives. 

The bills address child safety online, scam prevention and expanding broadband access in rural areas.

Each measure will now go to the full House Committee on Energy and Commerce for further review, changes and a vote. 

Here are the measures that Rep. Houchin has introduced:

The Data BRIDGE Act 

The bipartisan Data BRIDGE Act is a measure to improve the accuracy of the FCC’s National Broadband Map by incorporating USDA cropland data, helping ensure modern agriculture is not hindered by broadband funding decisions.

The GUARDIAN Act

The Guardian Act focuses on protecting children from online predators. The legislation would establish a verifiable and revocable parental consent framework for social media platforms. 

Under the legislation, platforms would be prohibited from processing a child’s personal data without parental consent. Parents would also be able to revoke that consent at any time, with the child’s account closed and personal data deleted.

“Parents—not social media companies—should be in the driver’s seat when it comes to their children’s online lives,” said Rep Houchin. 

Strategic Task Force on Scam Prevention Act 

The bipartisan bill was created to target fraud which cost Americans nearly $16 billion last year. 

The measure aims to improve coordination among federal agencies and the private sector in preventing and combating scams targeting Americans. 

“The federal government has agencies working on different pieces of this problem, but criminals do not operate in silos. We need the federal government to share information, coordinate its efforts, and work directly with the companies on the front lines of identifying scams,” Rep. Houchin said.
