(VEVAY, Ind.) – The National Weather Service is seeking volunteer observers in Southeast Indiana.
Volunteer observers can be any age and have any background, and they help measure snow and rain precipitation.
This is an initiative through the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) which is a non-profit community based network.
NWS officials said that our area is critically lacking when it comes to observers.
They are hoping to find volunteers in Switzerland, Ohio, Decatur, Franklin, Jennings, Rush, Fayette and Union counties.
“Volunteer observers fill these critical gaps by providing timely, ground-truth measurements that support a wide range of users, such as agriculture, emergency management, insurance, research, and water resource management, and many others,” NWS officials said.
For example, observers helped provide snowfall reports this past January that helped emergency managers document impacts and justify financial aid requests.
The only thing a volunteer needs is access to this website and an approved rain gauge.
