(NORTH VERNON, Ind.) – The quick actions of police officers may have prevented a suicide.
North Vernon police officers were called to assist a person that was experiencing a mental health episode on July 26.
“While speaking with the individual, she suddenly pulled out a knife and attempted to stab herself in the neck,” the department said.
North Vernon Officer Nathan Gibbons reacted quickly and prevented the blade from reaching the woman’s throat.
Gibbons and another officer were able to retrieve the weapon and keep the woman safe.
“This is another example of the difficult and often unseen side of law enforcement—responding to mental health crises with courage, compassion, and quick thinking,” the department said.
The two officers are being recognized by the department for their professionalism and bravery.
“We’re proud of our officers and the calm, decisive way they handled this dangerous and emotional situation,” the department added.
