Fire department urges homeowners to check smoke detectors

(VERSAILLES, Ind.) – A family narrowly escaped a house fire that claimed one of their pets in Ripley County on Friday morning.
The fire broke out around 10 a.m. at a home in the 9000 block of State Road 129.
Friendship and Versailles firefighters arrived to find fire and heavy smoke coming from the backside of the home.
“The residents were able to escape the fire without injury after being alerted by their smoke detectors. Unfortunately, one of the family's pets perished in the blaze,” Friendship Fire Chief Keith Sieverding said.
Sieverding is asking community members to keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.
He’s also hoping this incident serves as a reminder to check smoke detectors in your home.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
