Suspect dies during police standoff in Madison

(MADISON, Ind.) – A Madison man is dead after allegedly hurting a woman and then getting into a police standoff on Tuesday afternoon.

Police responded to Wolf Trails Drive and say they located a woman who had lacerations on her head from an apparent attack.

The woman was taken to the hospital where she is expected to recover.

Investigators say they learned the identity of the suspect was 50-year-old Clinton Toland and went to a nearby home where they said he was confronted in a hallway.

“Clinton quickly brandished a handgun before entering a bathroom and locking the door. Within seconds, Officers heard what they believed to be a gunshot,” stated the Madison Police Department.

Police eventually opened the door and said they found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No police officers fired the weapons during the incident.
