(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Representative Erin Houchin (R- District 9) has introduced legislation to address gambling addiction.
The Providing Opportunities for Individuals in Need of Treatment and Support (POINTS) Act of 2026 would expand prevention, treatment, and recovery services for individuals struggling with gambling.
“As access to sports betting and online gambling grows, we have a responsibility to confront the addiction that can follow. The POINTS Act directs existing federal gaming revenue toward prevention, treatment, and recovery programs to help people get back on their feet,” Rep. Houchin said.
The federal government would redirect existing federal excise tax on sports wagers to prevention, treatment, and recovery services—without creating any new taxes.
The POINTS Act is expected to generate approximately $100 million annually to support programs that help individuals and families affected by gambling addiction.
Nearly 20 million Americans are estimated to show signs of problem gambling, contributing to an estimated $14 billion in annual social costs nationwide.
Houchin is one of four U.S. Representatives who are introducing the bipartisan legislation.
