(VERSAILLES, Ind.) – Local law enforcement agencies are reminding residents of the ongoing threat of phone scams.
It has become fairly common that citizens report that they receive a call from someone posing as a local police officer.
The Ripley County Sheriff’s Office has been receiving inquiries regarding these scams this week.
“Scammers are using technology to make it appear as though calls are coming from official Ripley County government lines in an attempt to gain your trust and obtain sensitive personal information,” the agency said.
One resident says a person posing as a Ripley County government official tried to college private medical information from them. Fortunately, they recognized it was a scam.
The Decatur County Sheriff’s Office has also received these fake deputy complaints over the past few months as well.
Here are some tips to share with loved ones who might not be aware:
• Government offices will not call you unexpectedly to request personal, medical, or financial information.
• Caller ID can be faked—never rely solely on the displayed phone number.
• If something feels off, hang up and call the agency directly using a verified number.
• Never provide sensitive information over the phone unless you initiated the call.
