Watch here:
(VEVAY, Ind.) – Students at Switzerland County High School are speaking out following the death of Charlie Kirk.
The students are wearing shirts that read “Justice for Charlie Kirk” on Friday.
They describe the event as a peaceful protest and say they are standing up for First Amendment rights.
“We had many more students with shirts on, but weren’t pictured. We wore these shirts not only to stand our ground with our Faith and Beliefs, but to show anyone who has been making fun of the boy for the shirt he made that we don’t want violence, we want peace and our amendment rights,” senior Addy Preston said.
"We shouldn’t have to be scared to come to school, to peacefully protest, to speak our own voice, or believe what we want," Preston added.
A display of patriotism at Switzerland County High School is not unique.
The school corporation is one of the only districts in Southeast Indiana where each school, elementary through high school, is designated as Purple Star School.
The designation is awarded by the Indiana Department of Education to schools who show a significant commitment to veterans in the community.
Charlie Kirk was a popular conservative speaker who was shot and killed while hosting a debate at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
The suspected shooter has been identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson who was reportedly taken into custody on Friday morning.
