Two EC athletes have won Sectionals in three consecutive sports

Have won sectional titles in basketball, soccer and softball

(ST. LEON, Ind.) – Two East Central students  have accomplished a feat that no other female athlete has at the school for at least the past two decades. 

Seniors Kylie Ferreira and Anna Black have won Sectional championships in three consecutive sports. 

They earned a sectional title in softball, soccer and most recently, basketball last weekend. 

Athletic Director Kevin Moore went through the record books and said he can’t find another female student-athlete who has been part of three consecutive Sectional teams in the past 20 years. 

“Kylie and Anna are obviously multifaceted when it comes to being athletic and are committed to their programs, but one thing they might not mention is how good of students they are as well,” Moore said. 

He wasn’t kidding as Ferreira and Black both have a GPA above 4.0.  

They are also both planning to play soccer in college as well, as Ferreira will go to Mount St. Joseph and Black will be at Hanover. 

While Black stays busy throughout the year with sports, she sees the benefit sports make away from the field. 

“Being part of three different teams and playing for several different coaches teaches you many different lessons and skills that you can use throughout your life,” Black said.

One lesson she has learned is to fight through the adversity. 

“Although we’ve been successful recently with sectionals, we have also gone through times of losing games and it's really just being able to persevere through that and keep going,” she added.  

One lesson Ferreira has learned comes from Moore, who also coaches the basketball team. 

“He says get comfortable being uncomfortable and that has helped me a lot in the classroom. For example, I’m not great at public speaking and using that lesson has pushed me to be better when it comes to giving speeches,” Ferreira said. 

The two seniors and the Lady Trojans Basketball team will compete in the Regional round this weekend.
