Firefighters: Could have been much worse in nobody was home

(AURORA, Ind.) — We’ve all heard about the health dangers of vaping, but one family witnessed another danger firsthand on Sunday morning.
A couch unexpectedly caught fire around 10:30 a.m. at a home on East Laughery Creek.
The couch fire was caused by a vape pen that was charging and had exploded, Aurora firefighters said.
The homeowners were able to put the fire out themselves as multiple fire departments responded.
Fortunately, nobody was hurt as firefighters say it could have been much worse if the homeowners weren’t home.
While incidents involving exploding vapes may seem uncommon, there was a similar fire that occurred in Florida earlier this month. There was also a deadly house fire caused by a vape pen in 2018.
The exact causes of vape fires or explosions are not fully clear, but some evidence suggests that battery-related issues may be a cause.

Other agencies that responded today include Hogan Volunteer Fire, Dillsboro, Manchester and Greendale.
