Veteran who earned two Purple Hearts in Vietnam passes away

(DILLSBORO, Ind.) – A local Vietnam veteran who earned two Purple Hearts has passed away. 


84-year-old Gene Huntington was born in Friendship in 1941 and was a 1960 graduate of Cross Plains High School. 


He entered the Army in 1966 and served in the Third Infantry Division in Vietnam. 


He showed tremendous courage and sacrifice as he was wounded in battle on two separate occasions, which led to him earning two Purple Hearts. 


Huntington was also awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Bronze Star Medal, and two Overseas Service Bars.


He was discharged in 1968 and worked for H.R. Corson Chevrolet in Friendship as well as Cummins Engine Company. 


Some may remember Gene from being the groundskeeper for the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association in Friendship.


He was also a member of the Northcutt Laaker American Legion Post 292 in Dillsboro and also the NMLRA. 


Funeral services will be held at Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles at 12 p.m. on Saturday, August 23. 


He is survived by two daughters, Gena and Gennie, as well as five grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
