(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – A Decatur County deputy saved a couple from getting scammed.
Corporal Logan Wilder was at a gas station on Tuesday night when he saw a couple that was appeared to be acting nervous at a Bitcoin machine.
Wilder spoke with the couple who said their computer had been hacked and they had spoken with someone who they thought was with Microsoft.
The ‘Microsoft’ scammer told them to put their entire savings in Bitcoin to have the issue resolved.
Wilder and Greensburg officer James Saer contacted Bitcoin and was able to get the transaction stopped.
Sheriff Bill Meyerrose is recognizing Wilder for his quick actions that prevented the couple from losing a substantial amount of money.
A legitimate company or organization will never ask for payment through Bitcoin, green dot, or Apple gift cards.
Sheriff Meyerrose also cautions giving donations to organizations over the telephone or online.
“Most organizations have local chapters and there are amazing organizations locally that could use the help this holiday season and throughout the year,” he said.
If you are unsure if you might be targeted by a scammer, call your local law enforcement agency.
Here are some of the recent scams that the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office has dealt with:
