Dolly Parton performed in Brookville in 1975

(BROOKVILLE, Ind.) – Did you know Dolly Parton once had a two-day concert in Brookville?

It was held at the Franklin County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29 of 1975.

The performance was organized by the Brookville American Legion and served as a fundraiser for their new post after their previous facility was destroyed by a fire. The new post opened in 1976.

Concert proceeds also went toward the construction of the Franklin County Community Center. 

Parton was joined by Ernest Tubb and the Texas Troubadours, Peggy Sue, Sonny Wright, Johnny Roy, Wanda Bowling, Rhonda Waters and other country music personalities of the time.

Admission was $5 per person and there was a discount for $15 for the entire family. 

Attendees were encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets while the Brookville American Legion sold stools for $2. The Legion Auxiliary also served food and soft drinks. 

The Brookville American newspaper promoted the show and and described her as a country superstar and one of Nashville’s most brilliant songwriters. 

“Dolly’s childhood was spent in the hills of east Tennessee, but within hours of her 1964 graduation from Sevier County High School, Dolly boarded a bus for Nashville,” the Whitewater Valley Explorer stated on May 22, 1975. 

One concert organizer told the newspaper that Dolly would arrive in Brookville from Chicago around noon that Saturday. 

“Dolly and her show travel in a mobile house coach and reports have it that she lives in the mobile home when she is away from Nashville, Tennessee,” the Brockville American stated on June 26, 1975. 

Ernest Tubb was also a big draw as he's regarded as a pioneer of country music and is in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Since Dolly's passing last week, there's been speculation of when Dolly visited Brookville. Some believe she may have visited another time, possibly in the late 1960's, but we have not been able to independently verify that yet.
