Is a two-year pathway with Ivy Tech credits
(ST. LEON, Ind.) – School corporations across the country are battling teacher shortages and Southeast Indiana isn’t immune to the issue.
The Sunman-Dearborn School Corporation is addressing the shortage by not only focusing on retention, but also giving high schoolers real-world experience in the classroom.
The Cadet Teaching Program is a two-year education pathway where students interested in education spend part of the week studying, while also having the opportunity to be immersed in classrooms at schools such as North Dearborn Elementary
Students who complete the program can receive up to 15 dual credits from Ivy Tech, giving them a leg up once they reach college.
The school corporation recently hired EC grads Gracey Lynch and Aly Davis as long-term substitute teachers at North Dearborn Elementary. Both Lynch and Davis took advantage of the Cadet Teaching Program
Program coordinator Brenda Osman said it is a great opportunity for any student that may be considering a teaching future. Not only for the credits, but to also get a true idea if education is the career they want to pursue.
The program was recently featured on a FlyPod episode and you can listen by clicking here.
