Family adopts, saves dog that faced being euthanized this week

“People can help in more ways than that they think they can."

(NORTH VERNON, Ind.) - A dog that was scheduled to be put down is safe and sound with a new family.

4-year-old Lucy is a shepherd who had to be adopted this week due to overcrowding at Jennings County Animal Control.

The agency said Lucy, who has some medical conditions, faced the possibility of being euthanized if she wasn’t adopted by Wednesday.

Tayler Macdonald and her husband, Luke, live in Bartholomew County and had seen Lucy online before.

“She is just so precious and I remember seeing her several times online and thinking that I hope she finds a home,” Macdonald said.

Tayler said she saw the news story about Lucy on Saturday and felt that it was another sign that something needed to be done.

They went to Jennings County and adopted the dog and say they couldn’t be happier with having Lucy as their own.

“She is amazing and so sweet, and she honestly doesn't know a stranger anywhere that we've gone so far, she has been perfect whether inside or outside of our home,” Tayler said.

It's an adoption that saved the life of a dog who was facing euthanization just a few days ago.

While not every adoption comes under such serious circumstances, Tayler is giving advice to anyone who might be on the fence about bringing a new pet into their home.

“You really just need to go to the shelter and meet the dog. It will make your mind up right then and there and you will know if it is the right thing for you,” she said.

Macdonald also stressed that there are several other ways you can help sheltered pets.

You can volunteer at the shelter or even donate money to sponsor adoption fees.

“People can help in more ways than that they think they can."

"Even if you don’t have room, or already have three dogs or something, there are many ways people can help these animals” she said.
