(INDIANAPOLIS) – A Good Samaritan is being recognized for helping an Indiana State Trooper when every moment mattered this past November.
ISP Sgt. David Meyer was investigating an incident where a driver intentionally struck a pedestrian in Jefferson County.
The suspect, 46-year-old Larry Webster, allegedly left the scene of that incident and was found walking along Michigan Road near County Road 900 South in southern Ripley County.
Sgt. Meyer located Webster and was attempting to speak with him when Webster allegedly attacked him and a physical altercation ensued.
“Both Sgt. Meyer and the suspect went to the ground where Sgt. Meyer sustained a severe shoulder injury. The suspect stuck his fingers in Sgt. Meyer’s eyes and attempted to gain control of Sgt. Meyer’s handgun,” said ISP Sgt. Stephen Wheeles.
Fedex driver Stanton Loder III was making deliveries in the area when he saw the life-or-death struggle between the trooper and suspect.
“Without hesitation, Loder ran approximately 100 yards to the scene and immediately placed the suspect in a hold that allowed Sgt. Meyer to get to his feet and handcuff the suspect,” Wheeles said.
Earlier today, Loder was recognized with an award from Indiana State Police Superintendent Anthony Scott for his life-saving actions.
“The Indiana State Police and our communities are forever grateful to Mr. Loder for his heroic actions in assisting a trooper in need and we are honored to present him with an award today,” said ISP Versailles Post Commander Lt. Paul Adams.
On Monday, the Ripley County Prosecutors Office filed Attempted Murder charges of Webster in connection to the altercation with the trooper. Read that story here.
Webster is facing similar charges in Jefferson County in connection to incident involving the pedestrian.
