(BROOKVILLE, Ind.) – A Franklin County graduate has announced his candidacy for sheriff.
Lucas Dakota Richardson attended Laurel Elementary as well as Franklin County High School.
“This community shaped who I am, and I’ve dedicated my life to serving and protecting it,” Richardson said.
Richardson began his public service at the New Castle Correctional Facility in 2013. He joined the Brookville Police Department in 2014.
“Since then, I’ve continued to grow professionally, becoming an ILEA-certified primary instructor, a firearms instructor, and an emergency vehicle operator instructor. Currently, I serve as the Training Coordinator and Evidence Technician for the Brookville Police Department,” he told The 812.
He was promoted to sergeant in 2023 and recently completed Field Training Officer (FTO) school, in an effort to better prepare new officers for successful careers in law enforcement.
Richardson is running for sheriff with two top priorities:
Improved Countywide Coverage: I will restructure the sheriff’s department scheduling system to ensure better law enforcement coverage across Franklin County during all hours of the day. I will utilize the resources and personnel we already have to accomplish this at no added cost to the Franklin County taxpayers. This will improve deputy response times and increase law enforcement presence throughout our community.
School Safety & Presence: I will establish a weekly rotation for deputies to be present in our county’s schools as much as possible. When not responding to calls or working cases, deputies will be assigned to spend time in schools, building relationships and ensuring a safe learning environment for our county’s youth.
“I bring experience, dedication, and a deep love for this county. I’ve worn the badge with pride, and now I’m ready to lead with integrity, transparency, and a commitment to keeping Franklin County safe,” Richardson added.
Richardson is entering the contest against Franklin County deputy Brad Lecher who announced his candidacy a few months ago. The primary for sheriff will take place in May 2026.
