(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – The Greensburg Rotary Club and Decatur County Memorial Hospital joined forces for World Polio Day on Friday.
Since the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, cases of polio have declined by more than 99 percent, protecting millions of children from paralysis and saving countless lives.
While polio remains endemic in only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Rotary continues to provide critical funding, advocacy, and volunteer support to ensure every child receives the polio vaccine.
As many Rotarians say, “Polio is just a plane ride away,” because the threat remains as long as it exists anywhere.
“The fight against polio shows what’s possible when people unite around a common goal,” said Jenny Simon, DCMH Chief Nursing Officer. “That same spirit drives our work every day at DCMH as we partner with others to prevent illness, promote wellness, and strengthen the health of our community.”
In honor of World Polio Day, the Greensburg Rotary Club delivered donuts to DCMH healthcare workers as a gesture of appreciation and to help spread awareness of Rotary’s efforts to end polio for good.
“Healthcare is at the heart of Rotary’s mission to create lasting change,” said Mike Sefton, President of the Greensburg Rotary Club. “Partnering with DCMH allows us to connect that global mission with the local work being done every day to keep our community healthy and strong.”'
