Updated: Jan 24

"We could see the fire from a mile away"

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – A Decatur County home was destroyed by a fire on Thursday night.

Around 8 p.m., Letts and Westport firefighters were dispatched to a home in the 5000 block of South County 60 SW near Gaynorsville.

Firefighters could see the fire from more than a mile away when they were responding.

They immediately called for additional departments as Greensburg, Burney-Clay, and Millhousen responded.

The home was fully engulfed when crews arrived and firefighting efforts were hampered due to snow and ice conditions.

The home has been deemed as a total loss but fortunately, nobody was hurt.

Firefighters also received assistance from Decatur County EMS, Decatur County Highway, Decatur County REMC and CenterPoint Energy.

Hulsbosch Dairy Farm also assisted by providing a tractor to pull out an apparatus that had become stuck.
