Luella Knueven, who lived for 106 years, passes away

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – A longtime resident of Greensburg and Guilford has passed away at the age of 106. 

Luella Rose Knueven was born in Indianapolis on March 10, 1920 and her family later moved to New Alsace. 

She attended St. Paul Catholic Elementary School and Guilford High School. 

Luella married Clifford “Dick” Knueven in 1946 and in 1971 they moved to Greensburg where they owned and operated the IGA for several years before retiring. 

The couple spent retirement traveling in their motorhome where they visited all 48 contiguous states. They also loved spending winters in Florida. 

Dick and Luella were married for 62 years until his passing in 2008.

Luella later lived at Aspen Place Health Campus and enjoyed making quilts and crafts, working puzzles, playing cards and bingo, and spending time on her iPad. Above all, she cherished the time she spent with her family and the many memories they made together. 

The 812 met Luella when she and her family were celebrating her 106th birthday earlier this year, and one thing was very noticeable: She did not look or act like she was 106! 

“Some say she looks as young as 80,” said her son, Bob.

Her daughter, Mary, said that Luella went to beautician school which might have been one of the reasons she aged so well. 

Luella was a former member of St. Paul Campus of All Saints Parish and was a current member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg. She was also a lifelong member of the American Legion Auxiliary in New Alsace.

Visitation will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, October 2. A rosary will take place prior to the visitation at 9:30 a.m. 

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. also at the church. Graveside services will follow at St. Paul Catholic Church in Guilford. 

Luella is survived by her son, Robert (Mary Beth) Knueven; grandson, Matt Knueven; granddaughter, Annie George, and great grandchildren, Ben and Elizabeth; daughter, Mary (Robert) Richards; grandson, Scott (Jennifer) Richards, and great grandchildren, Robert and Katherine; and grandson, David (Megan) Richards, and great grandchildren, Sidney and Samuel.
