(VERSAILLES, Ind.) – The man who allegedly tried to kill an Indiana State Trooper is being held on a combined $8 million bond.
An initial hearing for 46-year-old Larry Webster, of North Vernon, took place on Monday in Ripley County and the majority of the spectators in the courtroom were state troopers.
Webster has been charged in two counties with Attempted Murder and being a Habitual Offender, stemming from a pair of incidents that occurred on November 19.
He allegedly ran over a pedestrian in Jefferson County before leaving that scene and going into Ripley County.
Investigators say he was walking along Old Michigan Road when he was confronted by ISP Sgt. David Meyer.
It led to an altercation where investigators say Webster stuck his fingers in the eyes of the trooper, caused a severe shoulder injury and attempted to grab the trooper's gun.
A FedEx driver intervened and police say the actions of that Good Samaritan saved the life of Sgt. Meyer. Read that story here.
Initial Court Hearing
Webster was brought into court for an initial hearing in Versailles on Monday afternoon.
He pleaded not guilty as prosecutors argued for a bond of $3 million or higher.
Ripley County Prosecutor Ric Hertel cited the seriousness of the charges along with Webster’s criminal history, which includes convictions of battery and animal torture, as reasons for the high bond.

Judge Ryan King imposed a $5 million bond, which is in addition to the $3 million bond Webster was given in Jefferson County.
“I can’t think of anyone that poses this high of a risk to the community,” Judge King said.
If Webster is convicted of all charges in both counties he could receive a sentence of up to 120 years in prison.
