Dispatched to two ice rescues this past week

(HIDDEN VALLEY, Ind.) – Dearborn County Water Rescue spent Saturday practicing for emergencies on frozen bodies of water.
Crew members were at Lake Melody in Hidden Valley training for ice rescues.
They conducted various exercises that involved either saving a victim that fell through the ice, or having to save themselves.
“Winter comes every year but we don’t always have ice, and surprisingly, this time of year is the busiest for us which makes this type of training crucial,” said Dearborn County Water Rescue Captain Meghan Keith.
It was a busy week for Dearborn County Water Rescue as they were dispatched to two separate ice rescue incidents.
Both incidents involved dogs that had gotten trapped on the ice, and fortunately, both ended with the dogs being safely rescued.
Cpt. Keith is sharing some ways to be prepared in the case of an animal or pet getting trapped on a frozen pond or falling through the ice.
“If you have a floatation vehicle, like a Jon boat, you should have that closer to the pond this time of year incase you need to rescue an animal or even a person, and it doesn’t hurt to have dog treats readily available as that could actually lure a pet back to safety too,” she said.
She added that you should call 9-1-1 immediately if there is a person or pet that is in need of rescue.
