(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – The snow and frigid temperatures have been ideal conditions for Charlie Gillman’s winter project in Batesville.
Several years ago, Gillman came across the historic Veal’s Ice Tree attraction in Indianapolis.
It inspired him to see if he could create an ice tree in his front yard.
The first few winters were trial-and-error as it led to a few dead trees.
He built a wooden structure and wrapped strings around it prior to the first freeze of the year.
Once it started freezing, he sprayed water from hoses, and moved them around which has led to growth of the ice sculpture which is now close to 25 feet tall. It is expected to grow even larger this weekend.
Gillman says he does this for his grandchildren as it puts a smile on their faces.
“I also like to stay active and it gives me something to do during the winter. I go out a few times a day and manage it,” Gillman said.
He encourages others to stop by his house, park and go see the ice tree up close.
It is located at his home which is across the road from Coonhunters Lodge on Coonhunters Road.
