(ENOCHSBURG, Ind.) – Several local families are remembering their loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice on this Memorial Day.
Friends and family gathered for an annual service to remember PFC Tony Seig in Sunman this morning. He made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Iraq in 2006.
Watch how family and friends honor Seig every year by clicking here.
There are also “KIA” flags placed at the graves of 22 local service members.
The flags were placed by a group of Batesville citizens who rode around the area on Saturday to honor those who died while serving.
One of those flags is placed at the grave of Kenneth Luttel in Enochsburg.
Luttel was a 1968 Batesville graduate and was the oldest of ten siblings.
He was a member of the 101st Airborne Division and served in Vietnam.
On June 1, 1970, Cpl. Luttel volunteered for an assignment in support of South Vietnamese forces on the Ho Chi Mhin Trail in the A Shau Valley near Hamburger Hill.
On June 2, an estimated two North Vietnamese Army (NVA) battalions attempted to breach allied defenses with a large-scale ground attack at Tun Tavern.
While in an artillery firing position, Cpl. Luttel was killed when his unit came under attack by the hostile forces.
He was awarded posthumously the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal.
Cpl. Luttel’s name can be found on the Vietnam Wall on Panel 9 West, Line 2.
