South Dearborn shares update on Manchester Elementary

"We ask for your support and unity as we face these challenges together."

(MANCHESTER, Ind.) – South Dearborn is continuing to weigh the possibility of closing Manchester Elementary.

The closure is being considered due to declining enrollment, much-needed building repairs and new state legislation that is expected to result in a loss of $1.5M in revenue over the next three years.

The school corporation provided an update on Facebook Saturday, saying, “As your school district, we value transparency, empathy, and collaboration with all members of our community — especially in times of change.”

If a closure happens, the school says factors such as transportation, class sizes, and building utilization will be taken into account.

“To ease the transition for any students affected by these changes, we will be hosting open houses this spring. These events will give students and families the opportunity to tour their new school buildings, meet teachers and staff, and begin building connections within a new school community,” the school posted.

The next school board meeting at South Dearborn Middle School at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15.

Last week, a group of Manchester residents requested a meeting with the school board. It is not clear if that meeting will be held.
