(CONNERSVILLE, Ind.) – Three dogs perished in a structure fire on Saturday morning in Connersville.
Crews responded around 6:30 a.m. after a fire was reported at a multi-unit residence in the 300 block of West Third Street.
“Due to the residence being converted into a multi-unit building at one time, access to the upstairs was blocked in the original staircase. Another unit had access to the upstairs but the entire floor in that unit had collapsed prior to the fire and was not safely accessible,” A Connersville firefighter said.
Firefighters had to evacuate the building and accessed the second story by ladders to put the fire out.
Two dogs were able to make it out safely while three others died, the Connersville Fire Department said.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Connersville Fire Department as well as the Indiana State Fire Marshal.
Nobody else was hurt as the American Red Cross is assisting the occupants of the home.
