U.S. 50 in Jennings County closed, other roads due to flooding

(BUTLERVILLE, Ind.) – The floods have forced some schools to closures and delays and also roads to be closed on Wednesday. 

Drivers are urged to never drive through water-covered roadways as a foot of water can float many vehicles while 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most SUV’s and pickups. 

“Road beds may be washed out under flood waters. Never drive through flooded roadways - you do not know the condition of the road under the water,” the National Weather Service said. 

One major road that is closed is U.S. 50 between Butlerville and Nebraska in Jennings County. 

“Please avoid the area as further rainfall will compound these conditions throughout the day,” the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office stated. 

As of 10 a.m., Ripley County is under a “Yellow” travel advisory, which is the lowest level and means routine travel may be restricted in certain areas. 

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Emergency for Fayette, Union and Wayne counties due to 4-8 inches of rain that has fallen and more on the way.

No other county currently has an advisory, however, be aware of hazardous road conditions.
