Students came up with the idea and their teacher supported it
(AURORA, Ind.) – Two South Dearborn students are using their American Sign Language skills during sporting events.
Senior Maddox Shackelford and junior Tessa Hinkle sign the National Anthem before home football and basketball games.
“Signing the National Anthem started as an idea, and we proposed it to our teacher, Mr. Breden. He was all in for the idea and put together a time for us to learn,” Hinkle said.
Both students credit the teacher, George Breden, for helping them learn the signs and also helping them feel confident performing in front of crowds.
“His passion for ASL and the Deaf community has really inspired us and made learning such a meaningful experience. He always goes above and beyond to help us understand not only the language but also the culture behind it, and that has made all the difference,” Shackelford told The 812.
Shackleford and Hinkle performed it for one last football game, as South Dearborn's final home game this season was on Friday.
The students plan to sign the National Anthem during basketball season and remain deeply appreciative of their teacher.
Hinkle said, “Mr. Breden is always going above and beyond to make ASL a fun and engaging experience. He puts together various games and creative ways to make learning fun! We appreciate everything he does for his ASL classes.”
